Buffalo have slower ruminal movements. The rumen has important differences from that of other ruminants such as it contains a larger population of bacteria, particularly the cellulolytic bacteria, lower protozoa and higher fungi zoospores. In addition, higher rumen ammonia nitrogen (NH4-N) and higher pH have been found as compared to those in cattle. It is otherwise called as “Living Tractor” due to fulfillment of laborious works to the farmers in their fields.
